30 min Speaker: Ashley Chaifetz is a Ph.D. student in public policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her explicit interests are in the policies and regulations surrounding food safety and the inequality of goods available to and demanded by socioeconomically diverse communities. With Dr. Benjamin Chapman at NC State University and Cooperative Extension, she has worked to design, evaluate, and implement a food safety best practices tool for school and community gardens.

Garden dates and notes:

Garden Lover’s Weekend, which is Friday, April 12 – Sunday, April 14. Garden Lover’s Weekend is held in conjunction with the Spring Historic Homes & Gardens Tour, which is sponsored by the New Bern Historical Society and the New Bern Preservation Foundation. A separate ticket is required for the historic homes tour.

The Spring Heritage Plant Sale at Tryon Palace is held on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13, on the Palace Grounds. Tryon Palace’s Heritage Plant Sale invites you to shop for perennials, herbs, annuals, trees and shrubs. The Gardens are open on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Visitors will also be entertained with musical performances on both days of the sale. Mermaid Morgan will play the hammered dulcimer in the stable courtyard throughout the day, while the Fife and Drum Corps has performances scheduled in the Palace Courtyard for Saturday, April 14, at 1:15 and 2:15 p.m.

The NC Extension Master Gardener Volunteers have a new public website that is both statewide and county specific by toggling the bright red ‘Change View’ button at the top of the page.
