Parents and students at Elon Park Elementary are growing food for the community and expanding young minds with our new Learning Garden. In Fall 2013, Elon Park partnered with Friendship Gardens to build and sustain a Learning Garden for teachers to use with their curriculum. The initial build included 6 raised garden beds. Students in the classrooms and the after-school program help plant and maintain the gardens. The Learning Garden aligns with curriculum in all grades - plants, insects and ecosystems. As our garden grows, students will be able to dig for worms, plant seeds, measure plant growth and monitor the insects that the garden attracts. At the same time students will get a better understanding of how food is grown. As a participant in the Friendship Garden network, produce from the garden will be donated to Friendship Trays.
