Our garden began in March 2011 with a potluck dinner among neighbors to discuss cooperative gardening. 22 families were represented in the first year and the number of individual plots doubled in 2012. We try to grow several “community crops” and offer personal garden units as well when we have enough space. All our practices are organic. In addition to reaping deepened relationships and bountiful produce for our families, we have been able to donate hundreds of pounds of produce to local food banks and churches. We morph each year as space and interest allows and intend to continue nurturing cooperation and skill-building for local resiliency in keeping with the model of Transition Towns U.S.A. For 2014, our garden is hosted by NC Mountain Realty Group. We are 15 families growing four community crops together and loving it.
