Anathoth Community Garden & Farm

Anathoth’s garden, now grown to a farm, began as a response to a murder that brought to light divisions in the community. Anathoth’s mission is to cultivate peace by using good food and sustainable agriculture to connect people with their neighbors, the land, and God. Anathoth’s core production program is HarvestShare, a sliding-scale, 180-member CSA (Community Supported Agriculture program). We also host weekly community potlucks and workdays every Saturday from March-October. We equip young people with farming and community-building skills through young adult internship and apprenticeship programs, through our Open Hands paid summer internship for teens, and through our partnership with Volunteers for Youth.

Southside Community Garden

The Southside Community Garden was founded in 2015 and is located in Asheville, North Carolina’s Southside neighborhood, a historically African American community. The garden is situated on the grounds of the Arthur R. Edington Education & Career Center, owned by the Asheville Housing Authority. The garden, which was constructed in 2015 by staff of Green Opportunities (GO), a local non-profit, and community members, is currently operated by a group of community members from the Southside neighborhood and beyond. Gardeners grew over 400 pounds of vegetables during the first season, and 1000 pounds during the second season. Produce from the garden is transformed into free community lunches Monday through Thursday by students enrolled in the GO Kitchen Ready culinary training program and distributed to local residents. Produce is also donated to food pantries and shelters, and taken home by community gardeners. Garden workdays take place on Saturday and Wednesday mornings, and all ages and experience levels are welcome to participate.

Namanganga Demostration Community Garden in Uganda

Our School and Community Organic Garden Program is incorporated in to a number of schools in Mukono, Uganda.
In collaboration with these schools, EACO has established many organic gardens that encourage students and teachers to learn modern farming methods. They are taught new skills that will enable them to farm the land in a productive and sustainable way. These skills are then passed onto their families, therefore transforming the previous Ugandan lifestyle of mere subsistence farming. We need volunteers and Donors to link up with us.

The project called School and Community Organic Garden Project, here we look at the food security and Nutrition for Children and women, under this project we look at
• Evaluation of indigenous food systems of Mukono community to access nutrition of local foods.
• Develop dietary recommendations from indigenous foods for overall health of Mukono community.
• Sustainable vegetable production for food and nutrition needs of schools of Mukono District.
• Develop a plan for potential school lunch program to ensure nutritional balance in primary school.
• Develop resources to educate pregnant and nursing mothers about nutrition for a healthy mother and child.

Reedy Creek Park Community Garden

A large diverse garden providing gardening opportunities to Charlotte’s University City area (near UNCC) and others in the area. Started in 2004, opened in 2005, as a citizen initiative encouraged by the University City Community Leadership Academy. Support came from Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, Cooperative Extension, and Waste Reduction. The garden is and has been from the beginning managed by the gardeners, Starting with 24 plots, it has expanded twice to 76 plots on approximately one acre. It is within the boundaries of Reedy Creek Park. Highly diverse, and proud of it, we welcome all. There has been a wait list for plots since 2008, but we encourage people to get on the list, and to start more community gardens. We support NCCGP, and ACGA.

Mount Holly Community Garden

Created in November, 2014, our garden recently opened on April 11th of 2015. The Mount Holly Community Garden is a subcommittee of the highly successful Mount Holly Farmers Market. Our garden is located at 126 North Main Street, on the property of First United Methodist Church of Mount Holly, and is 1 block from the heart of our downtown. We have 52 beds, including 4 adaptive beds for special needs of our gardeners.  Our beds are 4’x12’x20” and enriched with wonderful compost from Earth Farms of Dallas.  We are an organic garden and have workshops, cooking demonstrations, and children’s story time planned throughout the summer months.  In our brief history, we have become a gathering place for our gardeners, our citizens, and have daily visitors!  We encourage the “community” aspect as much as we do the garden. People are meeting people, novice gardeners are learning from their fellow gardeners, and friendly competition is normal conversation in the garden.  Our garden is blessed and is quickly becoming a blessing to the Mount Holly Community!

Gryphon Garden

Through our school garden, we are striving to raise awareness of healthy and sustainable foods.  After our garden is up and growing, the economically in-need students will be the first to receive the vegetables we grow.  They will be encouraged to help in the garden in order to gain knowledge about these food alternatives. This garden will be student let by the new “Farm-to-Table Club”  who will encourage peers who take home vegetables to also volunteer in the school garden.  Most likely, the students who will qualify to take home vegetables know little about sustainability and where their food comes from; they just see it once it gets on their plate.  In the garden, we will allow students to help plant and harvest the vegetables so they can see their food from the beginning as a seed until it enters their bodies. Those students will take home, along with their bag of veggies, recipes with instructions on how to cook the foods they receive in order to sustain themselves.

Adams ‘Magic’ Acres School Garden

Adams “Magic” Acres School Garden was built by parents and students in the spring of 2013. We are a year-round school so try to have a year-round garden!  We also have a butterfly garden adjacent to the vegetable garden. We hope the school garden helps to:
• encourage healthy eating habits by introducing kids to new fruits and vegetables
• connect children to the environment
• provide hands on activities to supplement teachers lesson plans
• and to introduce philanthropy by planting ‘rows for the hungry’ which will benefit our local food bank

Students have the opportunity to work in the garden during designated “Garden Days”, one day each quarter for every track, during each grade’s recess time. We are always looking for WCPSS approved volunteers to help guide students on these days.

Northwoods School Garden

Construction on the Northwoods School Garden began in the summer of 2013 with start up funding from our PTA. It is a community project which, except for a guttering job, has been built solely by volunteers. An estimated 65% of the garden has been built using reused decking thanks to a partnership with a local contractor. We continue to strive to reuse and repurpose where possible, and aim to purchase materials which are biodegradable or recyclable. Our garden uses no chemicals and is watered with rain collected in a cistern.
Northwoods School Garden seeks to teach children where real food comes from while gently encouraging them towards healthier eating habits. But the garden is not just for learning about food and nutrition.  It stimulates curiosity, encourages wonder, and promotes teamwork, responsibility and patience.  It offers lessons in science and ecology, of course, but also math, social studies, economics, history, arts and literature. The Northwoods School Garden provides a place for our school and community to continue to learn and grow.

Island Montessori Charter School Garden

IMCS is a public Montessori school.  Gardening is a natural fit for the Montessori method, where students learn by exploring hands-on materials and real-life experiences.  The emphasis on interacting with the natural world and community is a unique aspect of the curriculum.  With the help of several grants, we are starting a veggie garden and a pollinator garden.  Parent volunteers have built 6 raised beds, and planting will begin in March of 2015.  We would like to involve the community as well as students and families.  Please let us know if you are interested in participating!
Garden goals:
• Supplement our core curriculum
• Teach students about social responsibility, environmental stewardship, world citizenship, community service, and the value of hard work
• Give students a chance to connect with the natural world
• Build community, both with families at the school, and with the larger community outside of it
• Teach students and families about health and nutrition
• Give students an opportunity to build and run a sustainable business

Newport Community Garden

Newport citizens and businesses are very proud of this family recreation facility which offers both 10’ x 10’ and 10’ x 20’ garden plots for a nominal yearly rental fee of $20 and $30 respectfully.  Our community garden provides citizens and organizations, without sufficient gardening space of their own, the opportunity to have a garden to produce food for their families and provides a place for gardeners to share experiences, knowledge and skills. The whole family can reap the benefits of both the physical activity gardening provides and the greater opportunity for healthy eating.
Contact us by e-mail at newportgarden@outlook.com or message us through our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/NewportGarden or by calling the town hall at 223-4749.

ReOrganics Worm Farm Sustainable Foodcycling

This is a garden for the employees of Foster-Caviness Produce Delivery Service.  The soil is amended with worm castings from the ReOrganics Worm Farm which takes Produce Overstock from Foster-Caviness and combines it with food grade cardboard to make feedstock for red wiggler worms, who love to eat it all!  The rich, vegetable fed, organic castings are incorporated into the garden soil and the resulting garden vegetables and flowers are truly remarkable, healthy, delicious and really really easy to grow!!!  Employees love the garden and await it’s harvests with joyful anticipation.  The garden also provides sunflowers and bachelor buttons, which brighten the office environment!

Rice Street Community Garden

The Rice Street Community Garden’s goal is to produce fresh, organically grown, sustainable crops for the food-insecure population of Transylvania County. All of this community-based garden’s produce is donated to a Brevard food bank called Sharing House and a soup kitchen known as Bread of Life, helping to feed the needy of the town and county.

The garden grew its first crops in 2012. By mid-August of its third year, RSCG had harvested and donated 1,729,5 pounds of produce, worth approximately $6.918 (based on a multiplier for organic produce developed by an Asheville-based organization called Gardens That Give).

Fast distribution helps ensure that food-insecure households receive the freshest organic produce. Crops grown include asparagus, banana peppers, broccoli, bell peppers, butternut squash, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, collard greens, cucumbers, green beans, kale, lettuce (various varieties), okra, onions, peas, potatoes, radishes, summer squash, sweet potatoes, Swiss chard, turnips, and zucchini.

The mission of Rice Street Community Garden is to be good stewards of one corner of God’s earth and to share His bounty with those who are most in need. From the tiniest seed, great things grow: community, fellowship, charity, gratitude, a sense of purpose, a sense of place
